ARTIST STATEMENT

An artwork is all the more enthralling the more of an adventure it has been, particularly if it bears the mark of this adventure, and if one can discern all the struggles that occurred between the artist and the intractability of the materials.  And if he himself did not know where it would all lead.
- Dubuffet

I draw and paint for the pleasure and adventure of discovery. I am influenced by my love of art history and inspired by landscapes – my garden, my travels, and the Northwest.  My paintings begin, (but not too intently), with memories of a particular time or place, and evolve as I build up the surface.  I am interested in the line between representation and abstraction, image and non-image, drawing and painting. I try to remain open to anything accidental and intriguing that comes up, letting my observations lead me to make choices the best I can.
